Freedom In America
Case #
1925

Facebook bans Conservative Page from running ads for spreading so-called misinformation: After slapping a fact check on several posts, including a post from over two years ago, Facebook justified banning the Conservative Page Freedom In America from running ads on its platform. Facebook pointed to the fact-checks as evidence that the Freedom In America Page broke its advertising policy prohibiting misinformation. However, while Facebook defines misinformation as "claims debunked by third-party fact checkers," 10 out of its 11 so-called independent fact-checkers have repeatedly exhibited left-leaning bias. The platform also recognizes the authority of "organizations with particular expertise" citing the leftist World Health Organization as the definitive and only source of information about the coronavirus and vaccines. Although the policy only prohibits false claims asserted as facts, Facebook's fact-checkers also go after insinuations and speculations made by conservative Pages like Freedom In America. This allows Facebook to ban a Page from running ads even for minor discrepancies in interpretation.
