Ville de Bitche
Case #
2035

Facebook's algorithms accidentally delete Page of French town named Bitche: The town of Bitche, France, population 5,000, was finally able to return to Facebook after the platform's algorithms mistook the town's name for the American insult. "On 19 March, Facebook informed us that our page, Ville de Bitche, was no longer online, on the basis that it was 'in violation of conditions applying to Facebook pages'," the town's mayor said in a statement, according to the BBC. Facebook noticed the problem and reinstated the page, telling the BBC "The page was removed in error and was swiftly restored this morning, when we became aware of the issue." Bitche's mayor noted that Facebook's accident "demonstrates the insufficient and limited moderating tools that only the human gaze can appreciate." Another town with the word "Bitche" in its name altered their page's title in order to refrain from being deleted by Facebook's algorithms as well.
