Facebook prematurely ended an ad campaign about the need for closing the border just one day before the 2018 midterm elections: An ad paid for by then-President Trump made its rounds on television and social media in 2018. The video was centered on a convicted cop killer found guilty of shooting two California sheriff deputies. He was reportedly deported several times before he killed the deputies. “America cannot allow this invasion. The migrant caravan must be stopped,” the ad’s narrator said. A user reported the ad as violating Facebook's policies and although the post remained live, Facebook stopped promoting the video just before the 2018 midterm elections. In an email to the Media Research Center at the time, Facebook explained, “When it comes to ads on Facebook, we have a higher set of standards for what can run in an ad.” Facebook seemed to have no problem accepting money for and running the ads until there was a public media outcry when NBC News and Fox News stopped running the ad. Facebook claimed that the ad violated a policy that prohibited “shocking, sensational, disrespectful or excessively violent content” in paid ads.
