Tech companies use many justifications for the censorship they engage in. The three main reasons social media companies give for censoring content are hate speech, community guidelines violations, and "misinformation" and "disinformation." The term "hate speech" is often applied to alternative narratives on transgenderism, Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ issues. Like "hate speech," "community guidelines violations" constitute a vague reason Big Tech uses to censor non-mainstream opinions around issues including abortion, child exploitation and even Big Tech censorship itself. Big Tech applies the terms "misinformation" and "disinformation" to censor alternative opinions around issues including COVID-19, elections, and climate change.
