Instagram censors post about proposed California law: Upward News posted on Instagram, "California paves way to remove children from their parents. Gov. Gavin Newsom says that 'no state in America supports local control and parental engagement like the state of California.' Yet he may soon sign legislation that would allow the government to take children away from parents who oppose their gender transition. Newsom made California a 'sanctuary' state for sex-change surgeries for minors in 2022." Instagram placed an interstitial over the image with the post that read, "False information. Reviewed by independent fact-checkers." When users clicked to "See why," the box that popped up read, "False Information. Independent fact-checkers say this information has no basis in fact. Fact-Checker: Check Your Fact. Conclusion: False." The box also linked to the fact-check article referenced. However, this fact-check addresses a different Instagram post that discussed California Assembly Bill AB-665. The Upward News post did not reference a specific Assembly Bill, but given the timing of the post, it can be presumed that it referred to AB-957. This bill would have done just as the post suggested, though Newsom chose to veto the bill rather than sign it in a surprise to many. At the time of the post, it was accurate in saying that Newsom "may soon sign" the legislation of concern, as he had not yet vetoed the bill.
