X community adds a context note to Australian politician's post: Australian Senator Murray Watt posted a video in which he called for supermarkets to lower the price of hams for Christmas. He added a note to the post that read "Hands off our hams! I'm calling on the big supermarket chains to put a price freeze on Christmas hams so families can budget this Christmas. The Albanese Government is helping Aussies with cost of living pressures and we need the supermarkets to do the right thing too." The X community added a note to the post that read: "Readers added context they thought people might want to know. Christmas hams are not a problem in relation to the cost of living. 'The most significant price rises were Automotive fuel (+7.2%), Rents (+2.2%), New dwelling purchase by owner-occupiers (+1.3%) and Electricity (+4.2%).' In fact, food inflation has gone down to 4.8 from 7.2%." The note referenced two different web sites, including one official Australian government web site, that contained statistics to back up the claims. The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. X owner Elon Musk recently shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. The Community Notes account on X also posted that notices will now be pushed to users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added to it later.
