The Federalist
Case #
3126

Facebook fact-checked a Federalist article without addressing a single claim made: According to reporting by The Federalist, the conservative media outlet published a piece that used data that called the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines into question and addressed the dismissal and censorship of potentially useful information. The report indicated that Facebook fact-checker, Lead Stories, flagged the article for containing missing context with regard to information not included in The Federalist's story. The Lead Stories headline read "Fact Check: In UK, Fully Vaccinated ARE 4 In Every 5 COVID-19 Deaths -- But Simple Ratio Can Mislead If Other Variables Ignored." However, the recycled fact-check was written to address a completely different article and The Federalist did not even reference the statistic the fact-check claims to debunk. Fact-checked posts lose exposure on Facebook feeds as they are negatively affected by the platform's algorithm. According to Facebook, users fail to click through a fact-check interstitial to see the post 95% of the time.
