X community adds a context note to platform owner Elon Musk's post: X, formerly Twitter, owner Elon Musk posted "Oh the Irany ..." The post included a meme depicting a map of Iran surrounded by 26 United States flags that read "Iran wants war. Look how close they put their country to our military bases." X added a label to the post that read "Readers added context they thought people might want to know.” The added context read "There are no US military bases in Turkmenistan, Afghanistan or Pakistan. Even the military bases that do exist in the Middle East are not nearly as many as the post would have you believe. This exaggerated flag-based approach is alarmist. This post is misleading." The note included links to the a list of U.S. military bases and a Wikipedia article listing the same. The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. Musk recently shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. As of the time of publication, Musk had replied to the post after seeing the Community Note, saying "I love getting Noted - proves that no one is free from being corrected! This is obviously a joke meme, but there is more than a grain of truth to it. We should aspire to see things from the point of view of others." The Note has since been removed from the post.
