Dr. Anne-Marie Brady
Case #
2472

Twitter temporarily restricts account of leading China critic following tweets critical of the CCP on its 100th-year anniversary: Dr. Anne-Marie Brady is a New Zealand academic with an expertise in China's attempts to exert its political influence around the world, according to a local NBC affiliate in Houston. Following two of her tweets critical of the Chinese Communist Party on its 100th-year anniversary, Dr. Brady's account was "restricted" and both of her tweets were deleted. Her account was randomly restored the following day after intense backlash erupted on Twitter. "Twitter has restricted the account of NZ #China expert @Anne_MarieBrady's twitter," tweeted Australian writer and professor Behrouz Boochani, "if this was not for reasons like hacking then it could be a serious case of curtailing freedom of speech, legit. criticisms of CCP. DIsturbing." Dr. Brady pointed out how Twitter's policies state that sometimes restrictions, or other types of censorship on its platform, can be the result of "valid and properly scoped request[s] from an authorized entity in a given country." Dr. Brady responded to the wording in Twitter's policy: "Seems like @Twitter may have briefly forgotten they don't work for Xi Jinping #CPC100Years"
