Nick Sortor

Twitter censors Nick Sortor: Nick Sortor, an independent journalist, tweeted, “#BREAKING: It is reported that the Louisville gunman was 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, who reportedly texted a friend before the shooting saying he was feeling suicidal and ‘would shoot up the bank.’” Sortor also posted a screenshot of what appears to be Sturgeon’s LinkedIn profile. Twitter obscured the graphic with a “Sensitive Content” filter. Twitter includes “violent crimes or accidents,” “adult nudity and sexual behavior,” and “gratuitous gore” under its definition of sensitive content. Users on the desktop version of Twitter must click through a filter to view such tweets, if they do not wish to change their settings to show sensitive content by default. Users on the mobile version of Twitter are simply unable to view the tweets without changing the setting. It is unclear why Twitter applied the label to Sortor’s tweet. Although Sortor mentions the shooter’s violent remarks, the censored image contains no graphic content.
