Instagram Removed Video That Educates Others About Anti-Semitism

Autumn Johnson

Instagram has removed a trailer from a series dedicated to teaching others about anti-Semitism because “it contains instances of Jews recounting their experiences.”

Yair Rosenberg, the author of the series and Senior Writer at Tablet Magazine, says the video was removed because it attempts to educate others about anti-Semitism. The six-part series will be released on JewishUnpacked.com.

Instagram said the video goes against the platform’s “Community Guidelines.”

“Folks, Instagram took down the trailer for my antisemitism video series because (get this) it contains instances of Jews recounting their experiences of antisemitism,” Rosenberg tweeted. “Platforms continue to confuse people reporting on and raising awareness about bigotry with the bigotry itself.”

Johnny Kunza, the publisher at JewishUnpacked.com, says Rosenberg’s message is now more important than ever before.

“Thank you Instagram for proving the point @Yair_Rosenberg and we at @JewishUnpacked are trying to make,” he tweeted. “Yes, #antisemitism is bad, BUT educating people about it isn't. You taking our video down shows that this work is more important than ever.”

Kunza said other videos had been “ratio’d” on shadowbanned on TikTok. StopAntisemitism.org urged Instagram to “fix” the issue, calling the removal “an ongoing problem.”

Rosenberg says he hopes the series will inspire conversations about how to combat anti-Semitism.

“If this series inspires folks to dig deeper into the subject of antisemitism, have better arguments about it, and come up with better approaches than I did, then it will have been a great success,” he said.
