Pinterest bans weight loss advertisements from platform: A new policy announced by Pinterest, a digital bulletin board for users to create, edit and share multimedia content, has prohibited any future advertisements about weight loss on the company's platform. "It’s an expansion of our ad policies that have long prohibited body shaming and dangerous weight loss products or claims," stated Pinterest in a policy announcement released from its digital newsroom. "We encourage others in the industry to do the same and acknowledge, once and for all, that there's no such thing as one-size-fits-all." In its policy announcement, Pinterest listed several types of content that would no longer be allowed to appear on its platform. This content included, but is not limited to, "Any weight loss language or imagery"; "Any language or imagery that idealizes or denigrates certain body types"; or any content "Referencing Body Mass Index (BMI) or similar indexes." Pinterest's policy announcement also contained a list of other similar types of content already prohibited on its platform. That list included, but again is not limited to, content containing "Before-and-after weight-loss imagery." Pinterest did try to say that ads promoting healthy lifestyles, habits or fitness services would still be allowed, but only "as long as they don’t focus on weight loss." Pinterest's decision to ban weight loss advertisements was reportedly made in conjunction with The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), according to the platform's policy announcement.
