Instagram removed a Thomas Paine quote in users' stories for alleged 'false information:' Quilette managing editor Colin Wright posted an image and quote of Thomas Paine to his Instagram story. The quote read, "He who dares not offend cannot be honest," and according to a screenshot Wright tweeted, Instagram removed the story post due to alleged "false information." Instagram did not provide a fact check article as evidence for its "false information" claim, and the CensorTrack team could not find any such associated articles. The quote, however, was in fact written by Thomas Paine in his work "Forester Letter III," according to the National Thomas Paine Society. Several other Instagram users replied to Wright's tweet with screenshots of their own showing that they too experienced the same phenomenon. It is unclear exactly why the stories were removed, however it may have been an algorithm error. Separate from his Instagram story, the same graphic remains on Wright's Instagram profile page without a fact check interstitial over it.
