Facebook sorry after removing innocent comments from 81-year-old pig-knitter: Rita Rich-Mulcahy uses Facebook to promote her knitted pigs, which she is selling for charity. However, some of her innocent comments about her woolen pigs ran afoul of the Facebook censors. When one of her friends commented on one of her pig pictures on the first of February, "white rabbits, white rabbits," a UK custom for good luck on the first of each month, she responded with, "No, white pigs, white pigs!" She also labeled one of her neon pigs as a "hi-viz piggy." The Facebook AI determined both of these comments constituted "hate speech" and removed them. Fearing that she would be suspended from the platform with another innocent mistake, Rich-Mulcahy searched for a way to appeal the decision but was unable to find one. Thankfully, the issue came to the attention of Facebook, and after an investigation, the company issued an apology and reinstated her comments. As reported in the New York Post, “'Our systems made a mistake here, and the comments have now been reinstated,' Facebook told Rich-Mulcahy. 'We do sometimes make mistakes when reviewing content, which is why we give people the opportunity to appeal against our decisions.'”
