Pieter Friedrich
Case #
2087

Twitter blocks people of India from seeing tweet critical of their prime minister: A tweet from South Asia analyst and author Pieter Friedrich was blocked in India by Twitter after the government there compelled the platform to keep the tweet hidden from its citizens. Friedrich indicated on Twitter that he had received "a 'notice of withholding' from Twitter," which informed him that Indians could no longer view his tweet. "[S]howing the truth apparently hurts Modi's sentiments," he said in the same tweet. "Did you know Indian law allows the State to censor international Tweets it doesn't like?" According to screenshots Friedrich posted of the notice he received from Twitter, the government of India argued Friedrich's tweet had violated India's Information Technology Act of 2000. "Indian law obligates Twitter to withhold access to this content in India; however, the content remains available elsewhere," Twitter's notice stated.
