X community adds a context note to Kevin McCarthy's post: Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) posted on Sep. 19, 2023 before the House of Representatives vote that removed him from the Speakership, saying "I never quit." The post included a video clip of an interview where he said that he never quits. On approximately December 7, 2023, after McCarthy announced that he was resigning his position as Representative before the end of the year, the X community added a note to the post that read: "Readers added context they thought people might want to know. On December 6th, Congressman McCarthy announced his resignation from his congressional seat contradicting his statement he never quits. abcnews.go.com/Politics/kevin… " The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. X owner Elon Musk recently shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. The Community Notes account on X also posted that notices will now be pushed to users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added to it later. According to statistics showing on the post, it had been viewed 4.8 million times. Based on the posted notice, every one of the users who had interacted with the post in the preceding three months were notified when this Community Note was added to the post.
