Twitter’s Community Notes fact-checks claim by FBI Director Chris Wray: The FBI’s official Twitter account tweeted July 12, following Wray’s testimony before Congress, “In reference to the false assertions about investigating parents at school board meetings, #FBI Director Wray told the House Judiciary Committee that the Bureau is not in the business of policing speech.” The tweet included a link and Wray’s statement to Congress. Community Notes users presented evidence Wray had been dishonest: “The FBI’s statement is misleading. On May 18, 2023, former FBI agent Steve Friend testified before the House Judiciary Committee that he and others were directed to surveil and document parents attending school board meetings.” The Note included links to FBI whistleblower testimony to Congress and Friend’s own tweet accusing Wray of deceptive comments. The FBI Director came under fire during his Congressional testimony for the FBI’s anti-free speech activities.
