After California’s radical electric vehicle (EV) mandate came under EPA review, Climate Depot founder Marc Morano broke down what is at stake for the country.

Morano referenced his past work as a U.S. Senate staffer to eviscerate a dangerous California EV mandate during the Jan. 10 edition of Varney & Company. Fox Business host Stuart Varney asked Morano if the California mandate threatened to become a model for the entire nation and suggested that “this country would ban gas cars by 2035.” Morano agreed, before describing the mandate. Morano said, “What this basically says is: ‘California's going to be granted the right to set federal vehicle transportation policy.’ That's what this is. That's what the California waiver is in layman's terms, is, ‘We're going to let Governor Gavin Newsom dictate the future of gas-powered cars.’ This has to be stopped. It's unlawful. We need to have consumers make this choice.”

In fact, sixteen other states — Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington — have adopted California’s emission standards. In August 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved draconian regulations to phase out sales of gas-powered cars. According to CARB, the state has mandated that “all new passenger cars, trucks and SUVs sold in California will be zero emissions” by 2035.

Morano questioned why electric vehicles needed to be pushed by the government rather than competing on their own:

Instead people are, like, ‘Wait a minute, they're banning the competition. If these EVs are so great, why do you ban the competition?’ Same is true with solar and wind. Why do we ban coal, oil, gas—restrict it, ration it in order to have the winner, which is politically selected? And that's the bottom line. Its consumer choice and what makes sense logically. And this doesn't make sense logically even when you look at it from a climate-obsessed way.”

Earlier in the segment, Morano accused environmentalist radicals of trying to “create fear” and “push politics like an EV ban” before pointing out the absurdity of transitioning to EVs for environmental purposes. Morano specifically said:

“And if you were actually worried about ‘climate change,’ the last thing you would think of is: ‘EVs are the solution.’ It takes half a million pounds of materials, including raw Earth materials to make one average-sized Tesla battery. EVs dig the Earth and not in a groovy 1970s Brady Bunch way, Stuart, but I mean they dig the Earth and deeply with emissions, with environmental standards, and we’ll farm all of that out to the countries with the worst human rights and environmental standards: China and, of course, Chinese-owned factories in Africa with underaged kids. Even if you're concerned about global warming, EVs aren't the answer.”
