Leftist billionaire Alex Soros warned that his Open Society Foundations is not done with Europe, promising to remain active there and even increase aid in some cases.

In an August 31st op-ed titled “No Soros retreat from Europe,” the Open Society Foundations chairman responded to claims that the leftist group would scale back its work in Europe under his leadership. Soros discussed promoting expansion in the E.U., Ukraine, the Roma and a variety of projects he continues to fund in Europe.

The article also made clear that Soros idolizes the E.U., as he wrote  that “the European Union still stands as a global beacon of the values that shape our work.” He even went so far as to say that “like my father, I regard the E.U. as one of modern history’s great triumphs.”

Nevertheless, Soros admitted that the OSF’s funding and priorities will shift to the East, as the world focuses more on Eastern Europe.

Soros mentioned in his article that his father has been involved in Eastern Europe since before the end of the Cold War and bragged that his family’s foundation in Ukraine has spent “$250 million since 2014” on a “network of civil society groups” there. He also promised to continue pushing for the expansion of the European Union and continue funding Central European University (CEU) in Vienna.

CEU was founded by George Soros, who has continued to pour massive amounts of money into CEU and the Open Society University Network that CEU is part of. Notably, the OSF has spent over a billion and a quarter dollars on CEU from 2016 to present.

Eventually, Alex connected his push for globalism in Europe to American domestic politics. “As someone who spends up to half their time working on the Continent and thinks former United States President Donald Trump — or at least someone with his isolationist and anti-European policies — will be the Republican nominee, I believe a MAGA-style Republican victory in next year’s U.S. presidential election could, in the end, be worse for the EU than for the U.S.,” Alex Soros wrote.

Alex Soros added, “Such an outcome will imperil European unity and undermine the progress achieved on many fronts in response to the war in Ukraine. We are adapting OSF to be able to respond to whatever scenarios might emerge, on both sides of the Atlantic.” [Emphasis added.] Soros must have a strange metric for progress, as European countries have experienced skyrocketing energy prices, a refugee crisis, depleted military arsenals, the threat of military escalation and other fallout of war.

This is not a new concern for the younger Soros. In 2023, Alex Soros moderated a panel discussion with the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), where he discussed his fear of a potential Trump presidency.

He also discussed how the ECFR engaged in parallel diplomacy during the Trump era, saying that they have created networks to “restore the transatlantic relationship.” In other words, Alex Soros used the ECFR to pursue a separate foreign policy vision than the duly-elected U.S. president. Soros’ OSF gave over $12 million to fund the ECFR.

During the same panel, Alex Soros compared Trump to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, saying that Orban was “much tamer” the first time he served as prime minister than during his present term. "But when they come back, they know where the bodies are buried,” Alex Soros claimed of Orban and presumably Trump, He added that Trump had been working to win over the military and referenced “what the Heritage Foundation is trying to do by purging things.”

While Alex Soros admitted that he will reduce staff “headcount significantly” and shift focus in some ways, he promised to stand by his organization’s globalist goals. He concluded by repeating the ominous line from his subheader, “And it is my great hope that OSF, in its reconfigured form, will be able to help the European project realize its full promise.”
