Twitter community adds a context note to White House tweet:  The official Twitter account for the White House tweeted, “Gas prices are down by nearly a third since the summer – lowering costs for American families." The tweet included an image of a fake receipt dated December 5, 2022 that listed "Average national gas Price $3.40," "Decline since June peak $1.61,"  "Average monthly savings for a two-car family $170.00," and finished with "Total: Real savings for American families." Twitter added a label to the post that read "Readers added context they thought people might want to know.” The added context read "US EIA data shows regular gas now (12/5) at $3.39. eia.gov/petroleum/gasd… Other key dates & costs during the Biden administration: 1/2021 (Inauguration & minimum price): $2.38 2/2022 (Ukraine): $3.53 6/2022 (maximum price): $5.01 (The family savings estimate assumes use of 106 gallons each month.)" The label is part of Twitter’s Community Notes system. Twitter users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to tweets.
